Exploring the Therapeutic Benefits of Grief Poetry

In times of loss, grief can nestle into your daily life, leaving you feeling alone in the world. In this silent sorrow, it can be difficult to find a voice that echoes your own. I know this because I’ve been there. There is one cathartic tool that supported me, and has been helping people navigate through their pain for centuries: grief poetry. In my experience, I found writing through grief to be cathartic. Each time I wrote poetry on loss, it opened a deeper channel of expression. When I looked into this further, I wasn’t surprised to see that studies have shown benefits of poetry as therapy.

Grief poetry has a unique way of expressing emotions that can be difficult to put into words. It offers a space to process feelings of loss, sadness, and longing, allowing you to connect with your emotions and find solace in shared experiences. Through the power of language and imagery, grief poetry gently embraces the hurting heart, providing a sense of validation and understanding.

Engaging with grief poetry can also be a cathartic experience. It encourages self-reflection and introspection, helping you to explore your emotions in a safe and creative way. By immersing yourself in the words of poets who have experienced loss, you can find courage, hope, and resilience.

Whether you are going through your own grief journey or seeking a way to support someone you care about, this series which explores the therapeutic benefits of grief poetry can offer solace, healing, and connection in the most challenging of times.

The Writing Through Grief Poetry series

I created this series so your journey towards healing is just a scroll or page-turn away. In this series, I will explore grief poetry as therapy and how this art form can provide comfort during the darkest of times.

I believe in the healing power of poetry firsthand. When my mom died, I found comfort in curling up in a chair and putting pen to paper to write out my feelings. The poetry I wrote found its way into books, anthologies, numerous artist collaborations, and even an award designation. It’s been cathartic on so many levels and with my “Writing Through Grief” workshop, so many have discovered that when words fail, poetry speaks. I believe in the healing power of poetry firsthand. Poetry As Therapy

Poetry has long been recognized as a powerful form of artistic expression, capable of evoking deep emotions and offering profound insights into the human experience. When it comes to grief, poetry takes on a unique role, providing a language to articulate the complex and often overwhelming emotions that accompany loss. It allows you to give voice to your pain, offering a sense of validation and understanding.

One of the therapeutic benefits of poetry is its ability to create a safe space for emotional exploration, whether you are reading or writing through grief. Through the rhythmic flow of words and carefully crafted imagery, grief poetry invites you to journey through your grief, acknowledging and processing your emotions along the way. The act of reading or writing poetry can be a deeply personal experience, allowing you to connect with your own thoughts and feelings in a way that other forms of expression may not provide.

Moreover, poetry has the power to transcend time and space, bridging the gap between the past, present, and future. When reading the words of poets who have experienced loss, you can find comfort in knowing that you are not alone in your grief. You can draw strength from the resilience of those who have come before you, finding hope in the possibility of healing and growth.

What I find most interesting is that poetry is a bridge of loss across generations. In a recent study posted by the National Library of Medicine, Dr. Katrin Gerber and other researchers used poetry to draw attention to the intense and often long-lasting effects of grief on older people’s health and well-being.

How grief poetry helps with emotional healing

Grief poetry offers a unique avenue for emotional healing by providing a framework for you to process your grief in a structured and intentional way. The act of reading or writing poetry requires a certain level of mindfulness and presence, allowing you to fully engage with your emotions and experiences.

By immersing yourself in the words of grief poets, you can gain new insights and perspectives on your own grief journey. Poetry offers a different lens through which to view the world, inviting you to consider alternative ways of understanding and navigating your emotions. This fresh perspective can be incredibly empowering, helping you to find meaning and purpose in your grief.

Additionally, grief poetry can serve as a catalyst for self-reflection and introspection. The act of reading or writing poetry may encourage you to explore your innermost thoughts and feelings, providing an outlet for self-expression and release. By giving voice to your sorrow, you may begin to make sense of your grief, gradually finding a path towards healing and acceptance.

Poetry as a form of self-expression during grief

Grief can often leave you feeling isolated and alone in your pain. Poetry offers a powerful form of self-expression during loss, providing a cathartic channel through which you can communicate your emotions and experiences to others. By putting your thoughts and feelings into words, you can reach out and connect with others who may be going through similar struggles.

The act of writing through grief can be particularly therapeutic during the grieving process. It allows you to externalize your grief, transforming internal pain into tangible words on a page. This process of externalization can be incredibly liberating, and may help you release pent-up emotions and find a sense of catharsis.

The power of metaphors and symbolism

Metaphors and symbolism play a significant role in grief poetry, allowing poets to convey complex emotions and experiences in a way that is relatable and meaningful. By using metaphorical language and powerful imagery, poets can capture the essence of grief and loss, offering you a way to connect with your own emotions.

Metaphors have the ability to evoke a range of emotions and associations, providing a bridge between the concrete and the abstract. They can help you make sense of your grief by offering a tangible framework through which to understand your emotions. For example, a poem may use the metaphor of a storm to represent the turbulent and overwhelming nature of grief, or the metaphor of a journey to symbolize the process of healing and transformation.

Symbolism, on the other hand, allows poets to convey deeper meanings and messages through the use of specific objects, colors, or motifs. These symbols can represent aspects of grief that are difficult to articulate directly, such as the fragility of life, the passage of time, or the interconnectedness of all living beings. By using symbols, poets can tap into universal themes and experiences, creating a sense of resonance and connection with readers. For example, in my award-winning poem, “How We Live On”, I wrote about the ritual of making applesauce with my mom, to reflect upon her life and that of previous generations, ending it with this perspective on her passing:

You are more than a memory,
you are the ageless hand of time,
the beating clock of my heart,
you are everywhere.

Grief poets and their impact on healing

Throughout history, numerous poets have used their words to capture the essence of grief and loss, leaving behind a powerful legacy that continues to resonate with readers today. These poets have not only provided comfort and solace to those in mourning but have also played a significant role in shaping the way we understand and navigate the grieving process. While the benefits of poetry as therapy were not recognized at that time, these ancient poets were the forerunners and I am grateful to them.

One of my favourite poets is Rumi, and while he has written many deep insightful poetry about loss and love, this one resonates the most for me as it speaks to the depth of love that isn’t bound by time or distance. Rumi’s words are timeless and continue to offer strength and inspiration to readers worldwide.

Goodbyes are only for those who
love with their eyes. Because for
those who love with heart and soul
there is no such thing as
separation.
-Rumi

Another one of my favourite poets is Rainer Maria Rilke, whose introspective and deeply personal poems offer profound insights into the human experience of grief. In “Pushing Through” he acknowledges the cold darkness that presses down on us after a loss, while in this passage from “Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower”, he offers hope:

Quiet friend who has come so far,

feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
Let this darkness be a bell tower
and you the bell. As you ring,

what batters you becomes your strength.
Move back and forth into the change.
-Rainer Maria Rilke
